Game Overview

Secret of Evermore is one of those weird, charming SNES RPGs that never got enough love. You play as this kid and his goofy dog (who, by the way, changes breeds depending on which bizarre world you're in—alchemy is involved, don't ask). The whole thing feels like someone took Secret of Mana and ran it through a 90s sci-fi B-movie filter.

This hacked version lets you play co-op, which is great because the original didn't. The combat's still clunky in that old-school way—you'll spend half your time circling enemies waiting for your attack meter to fill—but there's something oddly satisfying about the weird weapon upgrade system and the fact your dog occasionally turns into a poodle mid-battle. The alchemy system's neat once you figure it out, though I definitely burned through way too many ingredients before realizing fireballs aren't actually the solution to everything.

It's janky, the humor's hit-or-miss, and the pacing drags in places, but there's nothing else quite like it. That dog alone makes the whole thing worth it.
