Senet: The Game of Pharaohs came out in 1986 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by West End Games. It was one of those quiet, thoughtful titles from the era, a digital adaptation of an ancient Egyptian board game that felt worlds apart from the arcade shooters and text adventures crowding the shelves. You didn't need fast reflexes or a mapped-out strategy guide; it was just you, the board, and a lot of uncertain rolls.
You control a set of pawns, moving them along a linear track of thirty squares based on the throw of four flat sticks (which serve as randomizers). The goal is to be the first to bear all your pieces off the board, but several squares act as hazards, sending you back or forcing you to swap places with your opponent. The pacing is deliberate, almost meditative, with each move requiring careful consideration of risk and the board's hidden traps. It feels like slowly unraveling a logic problem where chance is both your ally and your greatest obstacle.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
