Shadow of the Beast is one of those Amiga games that sticks with you—not just because of its dark, eerie atmosphere, but because it doesn’t pull any punches. You play as Aarbron, a guy who’s been brainwashed into serving a monstrous cult until a brutal moment snaps him out of it. The story’s grim, and the gameplay matches it: you’re mostly jumping, punching, and kicking your way through waves of enemies, with just one life and a handful of moves to survive.

It’s not just about mashing buttons, though. Timing matters—enemies go down fast if you hit them right, but mistime an attack, and you’ll lose precious health. Some sections force you to duck under spikes or leap over pits in tight sequences, and if you miss a hidden health pickup tucked behind a rock or off the main path, good luck making it to the next area. By the end, it shifts into a side-scrolling shooter, which feels like the game saying, “Oh, you thought this was hard before? Hold my beer.”

It’s punishing, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about finally nailing a tough section after a dozen tries. Just don’t expect any hand-holding.
