Shadow of the Beast is one of those Amiga games that sticks with you—partly because of its dark, moody atmosphere, and partly because it’s brutally hard. You play as Aarbron, a guy who was basically brainwashed into serving an evil cult until he snaps after recognizing his own father on a sacrificial altar. Yeah, it’s heavy.

The gameplay’s simple at first glance—jump, punch, and occasionally do a flying kick—but timing is everything. Miss an attack or misjudge a jump, and you’ll lose precious health. And since you only get one life with 12 hit points, every mistake hurts. There are hidden health pickups if you explore off the beaten path, but good luck finding them without getting wrecked by traps first.

What really stands out is the eerie world. You’re fighting through twisted forests, ruined temples, and other unsettling places filled with creatures that look like they crawled out of a nightmare. The later levels even throw in some side-scrolling shooter sections, just to keep you on your toes. It’s punishing, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about finally nailing a tough section after a dozen tries.

If you’re into old-school challenge with a side of grim storytelling, this one’s worth the frustration.
