Game Overview

Shin Megami Tensei came out on the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Atlus. It was a time when console RPGs were still largely about bright fantasy worlds, but this one plunged you into a desolate, demon-ravaged version of Tokyo. The atmosphere was thick and oppressive, a stark contrast to many of its contemporaries.

You control a silent protagonist navigating the city and its labyrinthine dungeons, screen by screen. Your main goal is to survive the apocalypse and influence the fate of the world by choosing a path between law and chaos. The signature mechanics involve recruiting demons to fight alongside you through conversation, where you must offer them money, items, or answers; fusing those demons together to create new, more powerful allies; and managing your limited resources in a world that offers little respite. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is unrelenting, demanding careful strategy in every encounter. It feels like a tense, calculated struggle for survival where every ally is a hard-won asset and every mistake is costly.
