Game Overview

SimAnt came out in 1991 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Maxis. It was a strange and thoughtful simulation during a time when many games focused on action or fantasy. You weren't saving a princess or shooting aliens; you were managing an ant colony in a suburban backyard, which felt both mundane and completely fresh.

You control a single worker ant at first, tasked with foraging for food, digging tunnels, and laying pheromone trails to guide your sisters. The main goal is to expand your black ant colony, defeat the rival red ants, and eventually drive the human homeowners from their house. Key mechanics include switching between a top-down map view for strategy and a close-up side view for direct ant control, managing different ant castes like workers and soldiers, and dealing with environmental threats like spiders or rain. The pacing is slow and methodical, with sudden moments of crisis that can wipe out hours of progress. It feels like conducting a tiny, desperate war from the perspective of a crumb.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
