Game Overview

SimAnt came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed by Maxis. It was part of that wave of simulation games on the console, offering something completely different from the platformers and RPGs that dominated the era. You weren't saving the world; you were just trying to run a successful ant colony.

You control a single ant, starting as a worker, and your main goal is to expand your black ant colony and defeat the rival red ants across the yard and eventually the house. You dig tunnels, gather food, lay pheromone trails for other ants to follow, and care for the queen. The game plays out screen by screen, and the pacing is slow, methodical; a sudden rainstorm or the lawnmower can wipe out hours of progress in seconds. It feels strangely absorbing to micromanage an entire civilization from the perspective of one of its tiniest members.
