Solar Storm came out for the Atari 2600 in 1983, published by Imagic. It was one of those games that tried to do something a little different on the system, a fixed screen shooter that felt more deliberate than the constant scrolling of its peers.

You control a small ship at the bottom of the screen, tasked with protecting your planet's energy shield from an onslaught of solar debris and zigzagging Deltoid enemy ships. Your main objective is to shoot the incoming threats while avoiding collisions, as each hit drains your planetary shield. The game is split between the frantic main stages and occasional bonus rounds where you can earn extra lives by shooting specific targets. The pacing is relentless; the screen fills up quickly, and the difficulty ramps up in a hurry. It feels tense and demanding, a constant battle against the inevitable.
