Sonic Battle came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Sonic Team. It was a time when the handheld was full of experimental spin-offs, and this one took the series in a fighting-focused direction. The game stood out by letting you brawl with Sonic and his friends in small, contained stages instead of racing through loops.
You control a variety of characters, each with their own move sets, and the main goal is to defeat opponents in one-on-one or team battles. Signature mechanics include building your own custom fighter robot, Emerl, by copying abilities from other characters; fighting across multi-tiered arenas with platforms and hazards; and using a simple but combo-friendly combat system. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike in later story missions. It feels like a scrappy, inventive take on Sonic that rewards experimentation.
