Sonic Battle throws you into isometric brawls where you juggle combos, tweak your robot’s moveset between deaths, and pray your GBA link cable doesn’t yank out mid-fight. That janky 3D/2D mix somehow makes the chaos even better.
So Sonic Battle is this weird little GBA fighter that feels like someone mashed up Sonic with Smash Bros. but made it isometric. The 3D stages with 2D sprites shouldn’t work, but somehow it does—everything’s fast, chaotic, and just the right amount of janky.
You’ve got nine characters (including a customizable robot you can tweak to fight exactly how you want), and matches play out in this combo-heavy system where you assign different special moves to aerial, ground, or guard slots. Lose a stock, shuffle your loadout—it keeps fights from getting stale.
Story mode’s decent, but the real fun is linking up four GBAs for multiplayer chaos. The AI’s not bad either if you’re stuck solo, though good luck unlocking everything for that robot—some of those moves take serious grinding. It’s not the deepest fighter, but it’s way more fun than it has any right to be.
