Game Overview

I picked up Sonic: How Eggman Stole Christmas on the Sega Genesis back in the day. It was one of those unofficial, fan-made cartridges that floated around in the late '90s, so it never had an official publisher or developer credit. It felt like a weird, festive offshoot of the main series, something you'd pop in during December when you wanted a little holiday twist on the usual blue blur action.

You control Sonic, as expected, and your goal is to stop Dr. Eggman from ruining Christmas by stealing all the presents across several themed zones. The gameplay is classic Sonic: you run, spin dash, and jump through side-scrolling levels filled with loops, springs, and enemies dressed in Santa hats. Two mechanics stand out: one involves collecting ornaments to unlock special stage warp points, and another has you bouncing on giant, ornament-shaped bumpers to reach higher paths. The pacing is fast, though some icy stages can be slippery and frustrating. It feels like a brisk, cheerful detour, even with a few rough edges.
