Sonic Mega Collection came out on the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, a compilation published by Sega. It was a solid package for its time, gathering a bunch of the classic 16-bit Sonic titles onto one disc when the GameCube was still new. It felt like a direct link to the Sega Genesis era, right there on a modern console.

You control Sonic, or Tails and Knuckles in some games, running and jumping through vibrant, obstacle-filled stages. The main objective is always to get to the end of the act, defeating Dr. Robotnik along the way. Signature mechanics include building momentum to blast through loop-de-loops and collecting golden rings both for protection and as a form of health. The pacing is relentlessly fast, and the difficulty can be surprisingly sharp, especially in the later zones and special stages. It feels energetic and precise, a rush of pure speed that still holds up.
