Sonic Rush Adventure came out on the Nintendo DS in 2007, developed by Sega and Dimps. It arrived during a period when the handheld was full of inventive platformers, and this one stood out by blending classic Sonic speed with a surprising amount of nautical exploration.

You control Sonic, and sometimes Blaze, racing through side-scrolling stages to collect Chaos Emeralds. The main goal is to explore a series of islands, which requires building various seacraft like a wave runner or a sailboat to navigate the overworld map. The signature mechanics are the constant high-speed platforming, using the bottom screen for special tricks to fill your boost meter, and the real-time sailing minigames between main stages. The pacing is relentless in the action levels but slows down considerably when you're charting the seas. It feels like a race where you occasionally have to stop and build a faster engine.
