Sonic Rush Adventures came out on the Nintendo DS in 2007, developed by Sega and Dimps. It was a solid entry during a time when the DS library was packed with inventive titles, and it built directly on the mechanics of the original Sonic Rush. The game uses both screens for its high-speed action, which felt perfectly suited to the handheld.
You control Sonic and Blaze, switching between them as you race through side-scrolling stages, collecting rings and boosting through enemies. The main goal is to gather Sol Emeralds by defeating bosses and exploring the ocean map with your customizable boat. Signature mechanics include the Tension Gauge, which fills as you perform tricks, granting a temporary speed boost, and the dual-screen boss fights that often incorporate shifting perspectives and rail grinding. The pacing is relentless, with stages demanding quick reflexes and memorization of enemy placements. It feels incredibly fast and responsive, especially when you chain boosts and tricks together without breaking momentum.
