Sonic the Hedgehog 2 XL takes everything you loved about the original and cranks it up to 11. The first time I booted it up, I expected a few tweaks—maybe a new level or two—but this mod goes all out. Chemical Plant Zone suddenly has these brutal new platforming sections that’ll test your reflexes, and the Special Stages? They’re faster, meaner, and way more chaotic. Took me three tries just to grab the first Chaos Emerald.
Boss fights got a serious glow-up too. Instead of just memorizing patterns, you’re dealing with new attacks and phases that keep you on your toes. And yeah, it’s still classic Sonic—blazing through loops, collecting rings, all that good stuff—but with just enough fresh ideas to make it feel like a proper upgrade. If you’ve ever thought "I wish Sonic 2 had a little more bite," this is it.
Fair warning: your muscle memory from the original won’t save you here. That’s half the fun.
