Sonic VR was an unreleased prototype for the Sega Genesis, developed by Sega in the early 1990s. It was an attempt to bring the series into a new dimension during the console's peak, though it never saw a commercial launch. You control Sonic through a first-person perspective, navigating polygonal renditions of familiar zones. The main objective is to race through stages, collecting rings and avoiding obstacles as you would in the standard games. Signature mechanics include judging jumps in 3D space to hit springs and platforms, and timing your movements to dodge enemies that approach head-on. The pace is deliberately slower than the typical side-scrolling entries, as the primitive 3D technology demands more cautious movement. It feels like piloting a fast, slightly unwieldy vehicle through a world you thought you knew.
