Game Overview

Space Harrier 3-D came out for the Sega Master System in 1988, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the few games on the platform to use the SegaScope 3-D Glasses, a peripheral that gave the illusion of depth on screen. At the time, it stood out as an ambitious attempt to bring arcade-style shooting into a stereoscopic format, even if the hardware had its limitations.

You control a running, flying hero who shoots at waves of enemies and obstacles across a series of surreal, checkerboard landscapes. The main goal is to survive each stage, defeating bosses that appear at the end. Key mechanics include rapid dodging of incoming obstacles, constant firing at airborne and ground-based foes, and navigating the pseudo-3D effect which sometimes makes judging distance tricky. The pace is fast and the difficulty can be punishing, especially in later stages where enemy patterns become more aggressive. Wearing the 3-D glasses adds a layer of immersion, making the world feel expansive and strangely tangible, even when the frame rate struggles to keep up.
