Space Megaforce came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Compile. It was part of that wave of shooters that really pushed the system's hardware, sitting alongside titles like Gradius III and Axelay, but it had its own particular flavor of controlled insanity.

You pilot a ship through horizontally and vertically scrolling stages, blasting waves of enemies and dodging their intricate bullet patterns. The main goal is to survive each stage and defeat the boss waiting at the end. Its signature mechanics are a weapon system with eight distinct primary shots you can collect and switch between on the fly, and a charge shot for each weapon that unleashes a more powerful, screen-filling attack. The pacing is relentless; it gets brutally difficult but never feels unfair. It feels like conducting a symphony of destruction where one wrong move ends the song.
