Play Spider-Man (Acclaim) (Beta) (Earlier) Online

Swinging feels off and wall-crawling’s sticky, but there’s something oddly satisfying about bouncing around pixelated NYC in the black suit, punching cartoon thugs. It’s rough, but the 90s charm is there.

Game Overview

Spider-Man for the Sega Genesis, developed by Acclaim, was an early attempt to bring the web-slinger to 16-bit consoles. It arrived during a period when licensed games were often rushed, and this version, particularly the beta or earlier build, shows some of those rough edges. The game places you in a side-scrolling New York, filled with the blocky architecture and limited color palettes typical of the era.

You control Spider-Man through a series of levels, punching thugs and avoiding hazards. The main goal is to progress screen by screen, defeating enemies and occasionally confronting larger bosses. Signature mechanics include a basic web-swing that feels imprecise and a wall-crawl that sometimes sticks when you don't want it to. The pacing is uneven, with moments of slow platforming interrupted by sudden enemy attacks, and the difficulty can spike without warning. Playing it feels like wrestling with an ambitious prototype that never quite found its footing.
