Game Overview

Spider-Man 2 for the GameCube came out in 2004, published by Activision. It was one of the better superhero games on the system at a time when licensed titles were often rushed or simplistic. This one stood out because it tried something different with the open city and web swinging, which wasn't common in games like this back then.

You play as Spider-Man, swinging freely around a scaled-down New York City. The main goal involves stopping Doctor Octopus, but you spend a lot of time tackling smaller crimes, chasing down thugs, and rescuing civilians. Key mechanics include aiming your webs at specific buildings to swing (if you miss, you fall), combat with punches, kicks, and web attacks, and a variety of story missions and side activities. The pacing is fairly relaxed; you can ignore the plot and just swing for a while if you want. It feels liberating to move through the city, even if the controls take some practice to master.
