Super Mario 64 DS came out for the Nintendo DS in 2004, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of the early titles for the system, a remake of the N64 classic that tried to show off what the dual screens and touch controls could do. It felt like a familiar adventure, but with a few new twists to fit the handheld.

You begin as Yoshi, exploring Princess Peach’s castle and hopping into paintings to enter different worlds. The main goal is still to collect Power Stars, but now you can unlock and switch between Mario, Luigi, and Wario, each with their own movement styles and abilities. Luigi has a fluttery, high jump; Wario can break certain blocks with a ground pound. The touch screen is used for movement or mini-games, which takes some getting used to. The pacing is exploratory, with plenty of secrets tucked away in each stage. It feels like revisiting an old playground with a few new tools to play with.
