Game Overview
Super Mario 64 DS takes the N64 classic and squeezes it into your pocket—with some fun twists. You start off as Yoshi, which threw me at first (where’s Mario?), but soon enough you’re bouncing between paintings in Peach’s castle just like the original. The DS version adds Luigi and Wario as playable characters, and each one handles differently—Luigi’s floaty jumps are weirdly satisfying.
The touchscreen controls take getting used to (I kept accidentally making Yoshi eat things), but the mini-games with the stylus are a nice bonus. The demo gives you a few stars to chase, enough to get that nostalgic hit of wall-kicks, secret slides, and Bowser’s grumpy face. It’s still Mario 64 at heart, just with extra ways to trip over your own thumbs.
