The 7th Saga came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Produce and published by Enix. It was part of that wave of mid-90s RPGs that tried to push the hardware with mode 7 effects and a more serious, sometimes unforgiving tone. You don't see many games from that time with its particular blend of ambition and harshness.

You pick one of seven adventurers, each with different stats and motives, and set out to collect seven magical runes before the other six characters do. Exploration happens screen by screen in an overhead view, with random encounters that can feel brutally frequent. A unique mechanic lets you temporarily recruit your rivals, though they might betray you if your level is too low. The pacing is slow, the difficulty is notorious, and it feels like a long, lonely trek where every victory is earned through stubbornness.
