Game Overview

I first played The Charge of the Light Brigade back in the late 80s, on a clunky MS-DOS machine. It was a 1986 release from Oxford Digital Enterprises, one of those games that felt ambitious for its time, trying to capture a historical moment with the limited graphics and sound of the era. It wasn't flashy, but it had a certain grim determination that stuck with you.

You control a lone British cavalry officer, guiding him through a chaotic valley filled with Russian artillery and riflemen. The main goal is to survive the charge, reach the enemy guns, and then make it back alive, though that last part is nearly impossible. You move screen by screen, using your sword to cut down enemy soldiers who get too close, while constantly dodging cannonballs that tear through the landscape. The pacing is relentless; one mistake usually means a quick death, and the sheer number of hazards makes every decision feel critical. It feels like a desperate, lonely struggle against overwhelming odds, and finishing a run, even a failed one, leaves you drained.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
