Game Overview

I first played The Count back in the early 80s, one of those text adventures from Scott Adams released for MS-DOS. It was part of that wave of early computer games where you had to rely on your imagination as much as the parser, typing in commands to navigate a world built entirely from words. There was no fancy graphics, just you and the screen, trying to outsmart a program that felt almost alive in its stubbornness.

You control an unnamed protagonist trapped in a castle, and your goal is to escape before the Count, a vampire hunting you, finishes his slow, inevitable countdown to midnight. The game plays out screen by screen, with each new location described in brief text; you explore rooms, pick up items like garlic or a stake, and try to use them in the right place at the right time. The parser is strict, often misunderstanding commands or requiring very specific phrasing, which makes every action tense. It feels like a race against a clock you can almost hear ticking in your head, and surviving it gives a real sense of relief.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
