I first played The Peace Keepers on the Super Nintendo back in 1993, a side-scrolling brawler from Jaleco that came out during a time when the genre was absolutely packed with competition. It didn't have the massive name recognition of some other titles, but it had a certain gritty charm that made it stand out on a shelf full of colorful boxes.
You control one of four vigilantes, each with their own basic attacks and a special rage-powered super move that clears the screen when you've taken enough hits. The main goal is to fight through urban stages, beating up mutant thugs to rescue kidnapped scientists. A key mechanic is the ability to pick up and use various weapons dropped by enemies, like pipes and knives, which adds a nice layer of strategy to the straightforward punching. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can get pretty intense, especially when you're surrounded. It feels satisfying to finally unleash that super move and watch everything in front of you just vanish.
