Game Overview

Tony Hawk's Skateboarding came out on the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed by Neversoft. It was one of the first games to really capture skateboarding culture on a home console, arriving at a time when 3D sports games were still finding their footing. The N64 version had its own feel, a bit rougher around the edges than the PlayStation one, but it was the same core experience that got everyone talking.

You control a pro skater, like Tony Hawk or Bob Burnquist, and your goal is to complete objectives in timed two-minute runs across levels like the school or the downtown area. The main mechanics are pulling off tricks by combining directional inputs with button presses, building your special meter to unleash bigger moves, and hunting for collectible letters to spell S-K-A-T-E. It starts off tough; the timing for landing tricks is strict, and you'll wipe out constantly until you get the hang of it. Once it clicks, though, the flow of linking grinds, grabs, and manuals together feels incredibly satisfying.
