Game Overview

Transformers: Decepticons for the Nintendo DS came out in 2009, published by Activision. It was part of that wave of movie tie-in games that tried to capture the blockbuster feel on a handheld, and it fit right in with the other action titles of the era. You play on the side of the Decepticons, which was a nice change of pace from the usual hero stories.

You control Megatron and other Decepticon warriors, moving through linear levels to hunt down Autobots and complete mission objectives. The core of the game is switching between robot and vehicle forms on the fly; you might be shooting as a robot, then transform into a tank to ram through a barrier or a jet to cross a gap. Combat is straightforward, relying on blasters and melee attacks, and the levels are designed to encourage constant transformation. The pacing is fairly quick, and the difficulty is manageable, though some enemy encounters can get repetitive. It feels like a solid, no-frills action game that makes good use of the transforming mechanic.
