Vengeance of Excalibur came out in 1991 for MS-DOS, developed by Synergistic Software. It was one of those games that felt ambitious for its time, trying to blend strategy, adventure, and role-playing elements into a single Arthurian package. You don't see many titles from that era that let you command a whole party of knights across a semi-open world, even if the graphics were strictly EGA and the interface took some getting used to.
You control a small group of knights, moving them screen by screen across a map of medieval Spain. Your main goal is to recover Excalibur, which involves exploring towns, talking to NPCs, and delving into dungeons and enemy camps. Combat is turn-based, letting you position your party and choose attacks carefully, while resource management and puzzle-solving break up the action. The pacing is deliberate, even slow by today's standards, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly due to random encounters or obscure objectives. Playing it feels like carefully navigating a world that's both generous with secrets and brutally unforgiving of mistakes.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
