Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? came out in 1985 for MS-DOS, published by Broderbund. It was one of those games that stood out in its time, not just for entertainment but for how it mixed learning with play. You play as a detective in the ACME agency, tracking down Carmen's henchmen as they steal famous landmarks. The main goal is to follow clues about the thief's appearance and destination, then fly to the right country before time runs out. You search screen by screen for hints, interrogate witnesses, and arrest suspects once you have enough evidence. The pacing is tense; if you misread a clue or pick the wrong place, the thief gets away and you have to start over. It feels like a race against your own knowledge, and getting it right brings a real sense of accomplishment.
