Game Overview

X-Men: The Official Game came out for the Nintendo DS in 2006, developed by Beenox and published by Activision. It was part of that wave of movie tie-in games that tried to capture the energy of the source material, in this case X-Men: The Last Stand, while working within the technical and design limits of the handheld. The DS was still fairly new then, and this was one of many attempts to bring console-style action to the dual screens.

You control Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Iceman across a series of missions that tie into the film's events. Each character has a distinct play style: Wolverine focuses on close combat with his claws, Nightcrawler uses short-range teleports to navigate platforms and evade attacks, and Iceman flies on an ice slide, shooting projectiles. The main objective is to fight through waves of enemies, solve simple environmental puzzles, and occasionally face a boss. The touch screen is used for special moves, which can feel a bit gimmicky but adds a layer of interaction. The pacing is uneven, with some levels dragging and others ending too quickly, and the difficulty spikes unpredictably. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes clunky brawler that relies on the appeal of playing as these specific mutants.
