Game Overview

I first played Yo! Joe! Beat the Ghosts back in the MS-DOS days, a 1993 release from Hudson Soft. It was one of those early action platformers that felt right at home on the platform, with chunky pixel art and straightforward, screen-by-screen progression. You don't hear much about it now, but it had a certain charm that fit right in with the era's experimental side-scrollers.

You control Joe, a guy who explores a haunted castle, room by room, armed with a chainsaw to fight off ghosts. Your goal is to rescue your girlfriend, clearing each area of enemies before moving on. The combat is simple but satisfying; you swing the chainsaw at ghosts, which burst apart when hit. The pacing is brisk, though the difficulty can spike without warning, especially since there are no save points mid-game. It feels frantic and a little rough around the edges, but pushing through each screen delivers a genuine sense of accomplishment.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
