Game Overview

Antz for the Game Boy Color came out in 1999, published by Infogrames. It was one of those many licensed games from the era, based on the DreamWorks film, and it fit right in with the platform's library of colorful, side-scrolling adventures. You controlled either Z or Bala, the ant protagonists, and the goal was to navigate through a series of hazardous environments, from the ant colony to the world beyond, to rescue the princess and thwart General Mandible's plans.

Gameplay involves moving screen by screen, avoiding hazards like magnifying glass beams that fry you on contact, and herding groups of panicked worker ants to safety. You fight off enemies, mostly termites and other insects, with a basic attack, and there are occasional boss encounters, like a aggressive wasp, that require pattern recognition and quick reflexes. The pacing is fairly brisk, though some sections can feel repetitive, and the difficulty has a few sharp spikes. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes frantic race against environmental threats and enemy swarms.
