Game Overview

Battalion Wars came out on the GameCube in 2005, developed by Kuju Entertainment and published by Nintendo. It arrived in that interesting middle period for the console, after the big first-party hits had established a library but before everyone was looking ahead to the Wii. It wasn't a marquee title, more of a solid, interesting experiment that built on the Advance Wars concept but took it into three dimensions.

You command a variety of military units, from basic infantry and bazooka veterans to agile attack helicopters and lumbering tanks. The core loop involves directing your squads across the battlefield using an overhead map, then instantly hopping into any unit to take direct control and aim its weapons yourself. Your main objective is almost always to capture enemy bases by clearing them out with your troops, which opens up new unit types to deploy from your barracks. The pacing is brisk, with missions that demand you constantly shift between a commander's strategic view and a soldier's boots-on-the-ground action. It feels like conducting a chaotic, toy-box symphony of explosions and radio chatter.
