Play Battle of Antietam Online
You maneuver pixelated regiments across a Civil War map, cursing when hidden brigades shred your flank from the woods you thought were safe. Those casualty reports hit harder without fancy graphics.
I first played Battle of Antietam back in the 90s, a 1993 MS-DOS release from a developer called Gamestar. It was one of those historical war games that felt right at home on a beige desktop tower, with its simple graphics and reliance on strategy over spectacle. You knew what you were getting into; it was a game for people who liked to think, not just click.
You control Union or Confederate forces, moving brigades and artillery across a hex-based map of the Antietam battlefield. Your main objective is to outmaneuver the enemy, capture key positions, and inflict heavy casualties while preserving your own troops. The game uses turn-based movement, line of sight rules that make terrain matter, and detailed combat resolution that factors in unit strength and positioning. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty can be punishing if you rush in. It feels like a tense, methodical chess match where every decision has weight.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
