Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday came out in 1990 from Strategic Simulations, Inc. for MS-DOS. It was a turn based sci fi RPG from a time when these games were complex, dense, and demanded a lot from the player. You didn't just jump in; you had to read the manual and commit.
You control a squad of characters you create or recruit, each with distinct skills like laser rifle expertise or computer hacking. The main goal is to stop a doomsday plot across the solar system. You explore locations screen by screen, managing action points for movement and attacks in tactical, grid based combat. Between missions, you navigate your ship through strategic space battles. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with a high difficulty that punishes poor planning. It feels like solving a dangerous, interplanetary puzzle where every decision has weight.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
