Game Overview
Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday is one of those weirdly ambitious Amiga RPGs that throws you into a sci-fi Cold War gone horribly wrong. You start off as Buck, a cryo-frozen pilot who wakes up centuries later to find Earth’s basically a wasteland under the thumb of RAM—this oppressive space empire run by corporate warlords. Naturally, you join the resistance.
First thing you do? Assemble a ragtag crew of six from a mix of classes like Rocketjocks (space fighter pilots, basically) and Medics, plus some oddball alien races—Tinkers are these tiny, hyper-intelligent guys, while Desert Runners are like post-apocalyptic survivalists. The character creation alone has this great '80s sci-fi vibe, where everything’s just slightly off from what you’d expect.
Gameplay’s a mix of top-down solar system navigation (watch out for pirate attacks), first-person dungeon crawling in cities and bases, and turn-based tactical fights where positioning matters way more than you’d think. The combat’s crunchy in that old-school SSI way—if you’ve played their D&D games, it’ll feel familiar, just with laser rifles instead of swords.
It’s got that classic Amiga jank—some menus are clunky, and the pseudo-3D dungeons are… well, let’s just say your imagination fills in a lot. But the setting’s so weirdly specific (Mercurian corporate overlords! Venusian rebels!) that it sticks with you. Definitely a time capsule of late '80s RPG design.
