Game Overview
So, Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday is this weirdly deep Amiga RPG where you wake up centuries after nuking Earth (oops) to find it’s basically a dystopian mess ruled by space capitalists. The setup’s wild—you recruit a squad of six misfits (Venusian medics, Mercurian engineers, that sort of thing) to fight for NEO, the last resistance group. Character creation alone takes a while because you’re balancing classes and alien races, and half the fun is realizing your Desert Runner rogue is useless in zero-G fights.
Gameplay’s a mix of SSI’s old D&D games and a space opera. You hop between planets in your ship (getting ambushed by RAM fighters along the way), then land to explore cities in first-person or fight in grid-based tactical combat. The pseudo-3D towns feel janky now, but the solar system map still has charm—like a board game where every planet’s got some shady bar or hidden rebel base. Just don’t expect your Martian warrior to survive the first encounter with RAM’s plasma rifles.
It’s clunky, but there’s something about the vibe—part Flash Gordon, part spreadsheet simulator—that sticks with you.
