Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday is one of those weirdly ambitious Amiga RPGs that throws you into a sci-fi dystopia where Earth’s basically a backwater planet getting milked for resources by space capitalists. You start off as Buck—yeah, that Buck Rogers—waking up from cryo-sleep centuries after nuking a Russian space station (oops) to find Earth’s a mess and everyone’s either oppressed or part of some rebel faction. Naturally, you join the rebels.

First thing you do? Assemble a ragtag crew of six from a mix of classes like Rocketjocks (space fighter pilots, basically) and Medics, plus alien races like Venusians and Mercurians. The character creation’s got that old-school D&D vibe, but with laser guns instead of swords. Once you’ve got your squad, you’re hopping between planets in your ship, dodging space battles, and exploring pseudo-3D towns where everything looks like it’s made of wireframe grids.

Combat’s turn-based and tactical—you move little icons around a grid, trying not to get vaporized by RAM’s goons. The whole thing’s janky in that late-’80s way, but there’s something weirdly charming about plotting your way through a solar system that hates you.
