Game Overview

I first played Cannon Fodder on the Sega Genesis back in 1994, a release from Sensible Software that stood out among the platform's action titles. It arrived during a period when many games were either straightforward platformers or complex strategy simulations; this one carved its own niche with a grim, satirical take on military action. It never pretended war was glorious, which felt different.

You control a small squad of soldiers, moving them with the D-pad and firing in any direction with the action button. Your main goal is simply to survive each mission, clearing screens of enemy troops, bunkers, and vehicles. The signature mechanics include managing your limited roster of named recruits (who permanently die if shot) and using terrain for cover against overwhelming enemy fire. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is unforgiving; mistakes cost lives, and you feel each loss. It creates a tense, almost desperate rhythm of advance and retreat that makes every completed mission a relief.
