Castle Wolfenstein, released in 1981 by Muse Software for MS-DOS, was one of those early PC games that felt genuinely new. It ran on machines like the Apple II, where blocky graphics and simple sound effects were the norm, but it offered something different from the arcade shooters and maze games of the time. You weren't just blasting aliens; you were sneaking through a Nazi fortress, and that changed everything.

You control an Allied prisoner trying to escape the castle. Your goal is to find the secret war plans hidden somewhere in the maze-like floors, then make it out alive. The game plays screen by screen; each room might hold guards, locked doors, or useful items like keys, uniforms, or ammo. Combat is basic, with a slow-firing pistol, but getting caught without a disguise means instant alarms and swarming enemies. The tension comes from managing limited resources and deciding when to hide, when to fight, and when to run. It feels unpredictable and tense, especially when a wrong turn leads to shouts, gunfire, and a quick death.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
