Game Overview
Castles is one of those weirdly addictive MS-DOS gems where you’re basically an overworked medieval architect trying not to bankrupt yourself. You sketch out castles piece by piece—walls, towers, gatehouses—but here’s the catch: every extra arrow slit or boiling oil cauldron eats into your limited resources. Run out of stone halfway through? Congrats, your "fortress" is now a sad rectangle with one wobbly tower.
What’s cool is how much personality the simple text choices give it. One minute you’re debating whether to bribe a rival lord or just let him siege your half-built death trap, the next you’re panicking because Welsh raiders showed up early and your walls are still two feet high. The combat’s barebones, but watching your design actually hold up (or collapse instantly) never gets old.
It’s janky, it’s punishing, and I’ve definitely rage-quit after misplacing a single tower. But there’s something satisfying about finally finishing a castle that doesn’t look like a child’s doodle.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
