Castlevania: Legends came out on the Game Boy in 1998, developed by Konami. It was one of the last Castlevania games for the original handheld, arriving late in its life cycle. The game follows Sonia Belmont, an ancestor of the famous vampire hunting clan, as she confronts Dracula in his castle.
You control Sonia through a series of side-scrolling stages, using her whip to attack enemies and break candles for hearts and other items. The main goal is to progress room by room, defeat each stage's boss, and ultimately face Dracula. Key mechanics include a screen-clearing special attack that drains health and a temporary powered-up state where her whip is engulfed in fire. The pacing is deliberate, with careful jumps and enemy patterns to learn, and the difficulty can feel uneven in places. It feels like a condensed, portable take on the classic formula, straightforward but sometimes unforgiving.
