Play Chessmaster, The (Rev A) Online
The AI swings between genius and total clown—you’ll smirk when it hangs a queen, then groan as it dismantles your defense three moves later. That tiny Game Boy screen disappears once you’re locked in.

Game Overview
Chessmaster on the Game Boy is one of those rare ports that actually works better in handheld form. The AI’s got this weirdly human-like unpredictability—sometimes it plays like a grandmaster, other times it blunders a rook in the dumbest way possible. I lost count of how many bus rides I spent squinting at that tiny screen, trying to outmaneuver it.
Don’t expect fancy animations or tutorials. You get a barebones chessboard, a handful of difficulty settings, and that’s it. But the controls are snappy, and after a few games, you stop noticing the monochrome squares. It’s just you and the pieces, figuring out how to not get stomped by a 30-year-old algorithm. Still holds up if you want chess without distractions.
