Game Overview

WinChess came out in 1994 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Magnetic Fields. It was a straightforward chess program for its time, fitting right in on a platform known for practical, no-nonsense software. You didn't get flashy cutscenes or a dramatic story; it was just chess, clean and simple, made for players who already knew the rules and wanted a digital opponent.

You control the white pieces, moving them across an 8x8 grid with the goal of checkmating the black king. The game features a basic set of mechanics: you can set the computer's difficulty level, take back moves if you slip up, and save games in progress. The pacing is entirely up to you; there are no timers unless you turn them on. It feels methodical and tense, especially when you realize the computer capitalizes on every small mistake. Playing WinChess is like having a patient but stern teacher across the board.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
