Building bases with a joystick feels weird at first, but soon you're scrambling to counter Nod's stealth tanks before they wreck your harvesters. The FMV cutscenes look gloriously ridiculous on an N64.

Game Overview

Command & Conquer on the Nintendo 64, released in 1999 by Westwood Studios, brought the PC real-time strategy series to a console known for platformers and action games. It was a strange but ambitious port for its time, trying to fit a complex mouse-driven game onto a controller. The full-motion video cutscenes, a signature of the series, looked noticeably compressed and grainy on the cartridge, but they added a certain charm to the whole experience.

You control either the Global Defense Initiative or the Brotherhood of Nod, building bases, harvesting Tiberium for resources, and training armies to destroy the enemy. The main objective is to complete a series of missions, balancing economic management with tactical assaults. Signature mechanics include constructing a base with various facilities, like refineries and barracks, and directing individual units across the battlefield using a cursor controlled by the joystick. The pacing is deliberate, often demanding careful planning over quick reflexes, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly if you mismanage your economy. It feels like solving a tense, interactive puzzle where every misstep can lead to a swift defeat.
