Game Overview

Congo The Movie: Secret of Zinj came out on the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by Visual Concepts and published by EA. It was one of those mid-90s licensed games that tried to do something a little different, built around exploration and light puzzle solving rather than just running and shooting. The graphics were decent for the time, with some nice parallax scrolling in the jungle backgrounds, but it definitely felt like a product of its era.

You control a team of characters, switching between them to use their unique tools; the main character has a machete for close combat, while another uses a laser glove to cut through obstacles. The goal is to navigate through interconnected screens of jungle and ancient ruins, finding keys and solving simple environmental puzzles to progress. Combat is straightforward but can get hectic when gorillas or baboons swarm you, and the pacing is methodical, encouraging careful exploration over speed. It's a surprisingly thoughtful game that makes you feel like you're actually piecing together a forgotten world.
