Dig Dug came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, a Namco game that was part of that early wave of arcade ports. It fit right in with other simple, focused games from that time, built on a clear idea rather than a big story.

You control a little guy with an air pump, digging tunnels through the dirt. The goal is to clear each screen of enemies, either by inflating them until they pop or by dropping rocks on them. You have to be careful, though; if you take too long, the monsters turn ghostly and can move right through the earth to get you. It starts calmly but gets frantic quickly, and that mix of careful planning and sudden panic is what makes it work. It feels like a constant, tense race against the clock.
