Game Overview

Digimon Story: Super Xros Wars Blue is one of those DS games that flew under the radar outside Japan, but it’s a solid little monster battler if you’re into the Digimon universe. You start off picking your partner Digimon (I went with Shoutmon because, well, he looks ridiculous in the best way), and before long you’re running around digital worlds recruiting more monsters to fuse together.

The Xros Fusion system is the real hook here—instead of just leveling up, you mash Digimon together to create weird hybrid fighters. Some combos work better than others (turns out sticking a tank on a dinosaur never gets old), and there’s a surprising amount of strategy in building your team. Battles play out in this grid-based system where positioning actually matters, which keeps things from feeling like mindless button mashing.

It’s all in Japanese, but if you’ve played a Digimon game before, you’ll figure out the menus pretty quick. The sprite work’s charming, and there’s just something satisfying about watching your frankenstein Digimon wreck enemy teams. Definitely a hidden gem if you can track it down.
