Game Overview

I first played Dragon Warrior on the NES back in 1986, when Enix and Nintendo brought it over. It was one of the earliest console RPGs available, and it really set the tone for what the genre could be on a home system. The game felt substantial at the time, offering a full fantasy adventure right there in the living room.

You control a lone hero tasked with defeating the Dragonlord and rescuing the princess. Movement is screen by screen across an overworld and through towns and dungeons. Combat is turn based; you select Fight, Spell, Item, or Run from a menu when enemies appear. You gain experience and gold from battles, which lets you buy better equipment and slowly increase your level. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be steep, especially in those early dungeons where a wrong turn can mean a quick end. It feels methodical and rewarding to see your character grow strong enough to venture further each time.
